Be proud of our legislators

I have been watching the performance of our legislators on Capital Hill for the last 12 years. As always there is a group that makes me proud to be a citizen of the CNMI. They are not aligned by party but by principle. They want to help the people, help themselves to improve their lives.

Also, there is a group that makes me angry because they do not seem to have the best interest of the people in their hearts. I have no interest to name those that make me sad. Your readers only have to look back at our recent history to identify the ones that followed the leadership of our former failed governor, Benigno R. Fitial. They voted with the governor strictly by politics, for their own interest, not the people who elected them. You can go back and read the newspaper articles to see what they did to put us in a deep hole of depression. I do not have to mention their names or how they voted that illustrated their stupidity. But, that said they were also supposed to represent the “people” who put them in power. Thank God that the CNMI is changing to become more a more humane place. We are all humans!

There are still at least two groups of politicians in our government, one based on principles to help the CNMI and its people and one based on politics who are still living in the past. As a community we need to move ahead to be: fair to all, provide opportunities to all, to follow the U.S. Constitution to guarantee our freedoms, and to eliminate the so called elite class that tells us what is right and wrong.

Using simple criteria, and also being concerned that a politician’s beauty is only skin deep, I like what I see in the following people in our Legislature; Speaker Joseph P. Deleon Guerrero, IR-Saipan; Vice Speaker Francisco S. Dela Cruz, Ind.-Saipan; Reps. Tony P. Sablan, IR-Saipan; Edmund S. Villagomez, Covenant-Saipan; and Ralph N. Yumul, Ind.-Saipan. Watch them to see if they can earn your vote next year.

There is still a cleaning process that needs to be completed from the Fitial days. Watch the legislators who are not on my list to see if they really represent you. Power is in the people’s hands not the politicians on Capital Hill.
