Hickeys give clue to detectives

Hickeys on the neck gave police detectives a clue that the girlfriend of a man suspected of burglarizing the U.S. Army Reserve Center’s troop store in Puerto Rico knew where he was, despite her denying any knowledge of his whereabouts.

Police arrested Derik C. Reyes’ girlfriend, Jashlie Nicole Camacho, on Tuesday night in Gualo Rai on a charge of accessory after the fact to burglary.

Superior Court associate judge David A. Wiseman allowed the 20-year-old Camacho yesterday to post a $100 cash bail and $900 in unsecured bond. She will be arraigned on July 2 at 9am.

A police report states that shortly after Associate Judge Joseph N. Camacho issued an arrest warrant for Derik Reyes on June 4, 2012, teams of detectives were assigned to check the known locations of Reyes.

A police detective said he and a colleague went to Camacho’s house and asked her about her boyfriend’s whereabouts. Camacho allegedly told the detectives that she has not seen Reyes the past week and that she could not recall the exact date and time they last met. The detectives, however, saw a hickey on Camacho’s neck that appeared to be recent at the time.

Camacho was then told about the arrest warrant for Reyes and was asked to call the police if Reyes contacts her.

On June 6 at 5:15pm, police operatives obtained information that Camacho was about to pick up Reyes at the Welcome Laundry in Chalan Kanoa to transport him elsewhere. Police immediately did a search of Camacho’s vehicle in the Welcome Laundry area but failed to find Camacho’s vehicle or Reyes.

At 8:30pm that same day, police obtained information that Camacho and Reyes were about to check-in at a motel but no exact location was given. An officer later confirmed at 8:50pm that Camacho had checked in at the Sunshine Garden Motel in Susupe at 7:10pm.

A receptionist confirmed with the officer that Camacho was with an infant inside one of the rooms. The receptionist, however, failed to confirm if Reyes was inside the room.

Police then staked out the motel. At 10:30pm, detectives knocked on Camacho’s room and she told the officers that she has not seen Reyes. The officers searched the room and failed to find him. Detectives again saw another hickey on Camacho’s neck that appeared “to be very new.”

When confronted about the hickey, Camacho broke down and confessed that Reyes was with her in the room earlier that night and that he left the motel using her car.

The 31-year-old Reyes surrendered on Sunday to the Department of Public Safety.

The U.S. Army Reserve Center’s Army Air Force Exchange Store, also known as the troop store, was burglarized on May 30 and the suspect was caught on surveillance camera committing the crime. Reported stolen were a 32-inch Panasonic LCD flat screen TV, two HP 201 monitors, and two Bose sound dock portable systems, all estimated to cost over $1,500.
