The brush fire that engulfed hectares of vegetation in the Evergreen area last Monday took an entire night to contain, according to the Department of Fire and Emergency Medical Services.

The brush fire erupted near the Evergreen Market below Mt. Tapochau around midday of Monday and took an entire night to contain.

The fire stretched out for miles, even igniting a hill near Kannat Tabla, and wiped out hectares of vegetation in its path.

According to DFEMS spokesperson Bobbi Jean Taisacan, the fire was contained at 5:30am yesterday and was extinguished around 6pm.

There were no fatalities and no homes went up in flames.

Taisacan said the only safety hazard that concerned DFEMS was the thick black smoke that was drifting toward neighboring houses.

The smoke has since cleared after the fire was completely extinguished.

According to a previous article on the Saipan Tribune, back in March 2018, a brush fire wiped out 120 acres of vegetation that started in Evergreen and spread to Kannat Tabla hill.

A brush fire also erupted at around 5pm last Monday on Rota. At about 5:56pm last Monday, a call was received on Rota about a brush fire at the Mua area. At about 6pm, wildland unit was dispatched to the area. Upon arrival, firefighters saw that the fire had already engulfed about one acre of vegetation. The fire was contained at about 7pm and no injuries or property damage was reported.

A slew of wildland fires has struck the CNMI since early this year as a result of the current dry weather that started early.

The dry season is expected to end soon, according to the National Weather Services.
