A brush fire at Wireless Ridge on Capital Hill that began on Tuesday was still raging yesterday, destroying about 80 acres of vegetation.

No house has been burned, according to Department of Fire and Emergency Medical Services spokesman Derek Gersonde.

He said department members are in the area, keeping the fire under control.

“It’s not uncontrollable,” he added.

Firefighters just let the fire burn vegetation.

Fire engines, however, have been posted next to houses to prevent the blaze from burning structures.

Gersonde said firefighters are also on the lookout for little flying embers that land on roofs of houses that may start spot fires.

Last week, DFEMS reported that a total of 30 brush fires have hit the CNMI in less than two months, destroying 106.75 acres of vegetation.

DFEMS records showed that as a result of those fires that occurred from April 10 to May 29, 2017, a total of 15,287 gallons of water was used. The department also spent 76.5 manpower hours.

Gersonde said the CNMI’s dry season has only begun. He reminded the public that the best way to battle a grass fire is to prevent it from ever starting.
