BREAKING NEWS: NMI Aeronautics team named finalist

The CNMI Aeronautics Team—a team of public school students—made it as one of the finalists in the Real World Design Challenge in Washington, D.C.

The CNMI Aeronautics Team are students of Marianas High School. They won last January the championship title that led them to represent the entire Pacific.

In the national finals, the NMI team is one of the Top 2 finalists. They are competing against Connecticut.

They are also competing against two teams from mainland China for the international category.

As of press time, the final competition in both national and international categories are taking place.

The students are Mimi Sakano, Ian Cataluna, Gaeun Yang, Chenoa Bunts-Anderson, and Daniel Villarmero.

This is an international competition that requires students to design and model drones to solve economic and social crises in the world. The 2018 challenge involved designing an agricultural drone for detecting pests and spraying pesticides. Teams must all design a complete business case, mission plans, and write na 80 -page notebook.

There were a total of 13 states and five teams from China that competed.
