BREAKING NEWS: Mangkhut on track to become a typhoon
A banding eye is forming near the center of Tropical Storm Mangkhut, based on information received from the National Weather Service in Guam and compiled at the CNMI Emergency Operations Center-State Warning Point as of 5:30am today, Sept. 9.
A typhoon watch remains in effect for Guam, Rota, Tinian, Saipan and adjacent coastal waters in the Mariana Islands.
Typhoon conditions, including destructive winds of 74 mph or more, are possible within 48 hours by Monday evening.
As of 4am today, Mangkhut was about 745 miles east of Saipan about 755 miles east of Tinian about 785 miles east of Rota, and about 820 miles east of Guam, with maximum sustained winds of 50 mph. Its present movement is west-northwest at 20 mph.
Tropical Storm Mangkhut is moving toward the west-northwest at 20 mph. It is expected to make a slight turn toward the west with a slight decrease in forward speed through Monday.
Mangkhut is forecast to intensify through Monday, probably becoming a typhoon later today.
Tropical storm force winds extend outward from the center up to 110 miles to the north and up to 50 miles to the south.
Because of the anticipated threat of Tropical Storm Mangkhut, Gove. Ralph DLG Torres has maintained Typhoon Condition 3 for the islands of Rota, Tinian, and Saipan as of 5:30am. this morning.
Typhoon Condition 3 means destructive winds of 74 mph or more are possible within 48 hours by Monday evening.
The CNMI emergency Operations Center State Warning Point will be monitoring the movement of Tropical Storm Mangkhut (26w) and will be issuing out bulletins as they become available. Keep a close watch on updates to weather forecasts and stay informed on the latest statements and advisories which will be available through local media sources and NOAA weather radio broadcast on 162.5 megahertz, or call CNMI EOC State Warning Point at 237-8000 or 664-8000, and for the Northern Islands to contact CNMI EOC State Warning Point at high frequency single side band radio on frequency 5.205.0.
The next scheduled bulletin will be issued at 8am later this morning, followed by an intermediate advisory at 11am. (HSEM)
