BREAKING NEWS: Chan-Hom changes track, now heading near Saipan, Tinian
Typhoon Condition II now raised over the two islands, Tropical Condition II for Rota
Typhoon Condition II has now been raised for the islands of Saipan and Tinian by Gov. Eloy S. Inos as Tropical Storm Chan-Hom changed track and is now expected to move closer to the two islands.
Under the said condition, typhoon-force winds of up 70 miles per hour and above may be felt within 24 hours.
For Rota, it has been downgraded to Tropical Storm Condition II, according to the latest bulletin.
Shelters are now open for the public who might want to seek a safer place as the storm passes. For Saipan, shelters are Tanapag Middle School, Garapa Elementary School, Koblerville Elementary School, Kagman High School, and San Vicente Elementary School. For Tinian, Tinian Elementary School will cater to the public.
According to CNMI Homeland Security and Emergency Management deputy special assistant Gerald Deleon Guerrero, the expected closest point of approach for the storm will be late afternoon or early evening tomorrow, when the storm will be a bit north of Saipan.
Typhoon Condition I is expected to be raised tomorrow morning, when destructive winds may be felt within 12 hours.
The center of Tropical Storm Chan-Hom was located 235 miles southeast of Saipan and Tinian. It was moving north-northwest at 10 mph. Maximum sustained winds remain at 50 mph. Tropical storm force winds extend outward up to 115 miles from the center, primarily in the southern semi-circle.
Chan-hom is expected to intensify slowly, possibly becoming a typhoon again Sunday morning.
According to HSEM, residents of Saipan, Tinian and Rota should maintain necessary precautionary measures for gusty strong winds, heavy rain showers, and possible flooding in low lying areas associated with the storm.
Residents should secure all loose objects around the house that needs to be strapped down or removed and secured to prevent them from being picked up and propelled by the strong winds.
HSEM said about 8 to 12 inches of rain is expected for Saipan and Tinian. A flash flood watch is in effect through Monday afternoon.
