The CNMI men’s bowling team hopes to improve its sixth place finish last year when it competes in the 28th edition of the Asian Intercity Bowling Championships set from Nov. 5 to 11 at the E-Lanes Bowling Center in San Juan City, Philippines.

The 14-member Saipan Bowling Association delegation, headed by its president Jerry Tan, left for the Philippines early this morning. SBA secretary-treasurer Ross Zapanta is the head of delegation, while Raymond Angeles and Laarni Zapanta are the men’s and women’s team managers, respectively. Many time perfect gamer Robert Talavera and former CNMI youth bowler Raymond Zapanta will be leading the men’s team, which has also Simon Manacop and Ador Dimaano as members, while pinbusters Diana Camacho, Gloria Omechelang, Elena Soll, and Yho Villavicencio make up the women’s squad. Ruselle Zapanta is the men’s team coach, while Carrie Camacho is his counterpart in the women’s side, which will be competing for the first time since 2009 when Guam hosted the annual event.

Raymond Zapanta was the top CNMI bowler in last year’s Asian Intercity in Guam after placeing 11th out of 43 participants in the men’s singles. He had had scores of 232, 194, 225, 180, 180 and 171 in the six-game series for a 1,181 total and a 196.83 average.

Manacop, who also competed last year, finished 23rd overall with a 1,086 total (142, 170, 179, 180, 213 and 202) for a 181 average. Angeles and Ariel Dumapit, 24th and 41st overall, were the other members of the CNMI team that competed last year at the Central Lanes Bowling Center in Tamuning.

Manacop and Raymond Zapanta also came in 13th place in the men’s doubles event last year after tallying 2,257 pinfalls, while Angeles and Dumapit landed at 19th (1,989). Raymond Zapanta then placed 13th overall in the men’s all events with 3,455 after scores of 1,181 (singles), 1,112 (doubles) and 1,162 (team). Angeles was 24th (3,321), followed by Manacop at 25th (3,306) and Dumapit at 41st (2,742).

The CNMI finished sixth overall in the men’s team with 4,420 total pitfalls.
