WASHINGTON, D.C.—Delegate Madeleine Z. Bordallo issued yesterday the following statement after attending a joint session of Congress to receive President Obama’s State of the Union Address. She was joined by Peter Camit, president of the Guam Society of America, who viewed the address from the House Gallery as Bordallo’s guest.
“Tonight President Obama laid out an aggressive agenda that will continue to build the economy and lift the middle class,” said Bordallo. “Overall, many of the President’s proposals will make significant investments in middle-class families. However, Congress must remain focused on eliminating sequestration or funding any of these initiatives will be difficult. We have many ways to solve sequestration, and I hope congressional leaders are serious about ending the awful effects of sequestration on federal spending. We have an opportunity over the next several months, before the next presidential election begins in earnest, to address a wide range of issue, but it must start with addressing sequestration.”
“Additionally, I am looking forward to having a more comprehensive discussion on the President’s proposal for free tuition for student attending a community college. I support the President’s intent to ensure that Americans have the tools and education needed to compete in a global economy, and I have long supported efforts to make college more affordable for students. This proposal will give state and local government the flexibility to choose to participate in the program, and I look forward to working with the administration and my colleagues in Congress to ensure that Guam is eligible to participate, should local leaders decide to do so.” (PR)
