Bordallo, PDSC offers free notary for war claims applicants

HAGÅTÑA, Guam—Delegate Madeleine Z. Bordallo and the Guam Public Defender Service Corp. announced Wednesday that PDSC will provide free notary public services for those completing applications under the Guam War Claims Program.

A notary public from the PDSC will be available at Bordallo’s office in Hagåtña twice a month to provide the service free of charge to applicants.

Those seeking the service can visit the office on the second and fourth Thursdays of the month from 9am to 11am.

The Guam War Claims Program is authorized by the World War II Loyalty Recognition Act that became law on Dec. 23, 2016. The deadline for submitting an application is June 20, 2018. All completed applications must be notarized before being submitted to the Foreign Claims Settlement Commission.

“We are happy to partner with [Delegate] Bordallo’s office to help provide notary service to Guam’s War claimants,” said Stephen P. Hattori, executive director of the Guam PDSC.

PDSC currently provides notary service of legal documents the corporation prepares for its indigent clients who are either unable to afford the nominal cost of a notary public or are unable to avail of such services.

“Knowing that our man’åmko have waited decades to file war claims, we believe that allowing our notaries to assist in completing the process is the least we can do for the people of Guam,” Hattori added.

“Our man’åmko have been waiting far too long to receive their war reparations, and we want to make this process as easy and accessible as possible,” said Bordallo. “My office has distributed hundreds of applications to man’åmko in our community and their family members in the past three months. I commend Guam’s Public Defender Service Corp. for making its notaries available to applicants and partnering with my office to provide the service free of charge. PDCS notaries will be available at my district office in Hagåtña twice a month and we hope that our survivors and decedents’ families will utilize this service prior to submitting war claims applications to the Foreign Claims Settlement Commission.” (PR)
