HONOLULU, Hawaii—Effective immediately, all Bank of Hawaii branches across the state of Hawaii and the West Pacific will be accepting donations to support relief efforts on Saipan following the damage caused by Typhoon Soudelor. All donations will go to the American Red Cross.

Check donations may be made payable to: American Red Cross – Saipan Disaster Relief, and deposited at any Bank of Hawaii branch. Cash donations are also being accepted.

“Typhoon Soudelor is the biggest storm to hit Saipan in 30 years, and the situation is desperate,” said Coralie Chun Matayoshi, CEO of the American Red Cross, Pacific Islands Region – Hawaii Guam Saipan. “Over 1,100 homes were affected, including nearly 600 that were completely destroyed or suffered major damage. About 600 residents sought refuge in shelters with Red Cross to date providing over 14,000 meals and 26,000 emergency relief items. And it’s about to get worse. Attempts to restore the downed electrical, water and sewage systems are being hampered by another slow moving storm expected to hit this weekend, with another storm to follow. There are 90 Red Cross workers on the ground with plans to deploy 40 more.”

“We don’t want our neighbors on Saipan to lose hope, and so we are incredibly grateful to Bank of Hawaii for giving people in Hawaii an opportunity to contribute to our humanitarian relief efforts,” said Chun Matayoshi. (BOH)
