BOE approves new school calendar for public schools
The State Board of Education has adopted a new school calendar for public schools that calls for 180 instructional days for elementary and secondary levels effective this school year 2012-2013.
These instructional days will be taken in four quarters with 45 instructional days per quarter. For the first quarter, classes are scheduled from Sept. 4 to Nov. 9, while the second quarter will begin on Nov. 13 and end on Feb. 1, 2013.
For the third quarter, the 45 instructional days are scheduled from Feb. 4 to April 16, while the fourth quarter will last from April 17 to June 20.
All certified personnel of the Public School System, including all teaching employees, are slated to report for work starting Aug. 27 in time for their school-level professional development activities.
According to Education Commissioner Rita A. Sablan, schoolteachers were consulted about the new calendar, which has 14 official holidays and breaks between instructional days.
Classes will start Sept. 4 at all grade levels, a Tuesday, since the first Monday of the month falls on Labor Day, a holiday.
The board also approved a new school calendar for the Head Start program, which also has 180 instructional days in four quarters that starts on Aug. 29; the last day of instruction is on June 11, 2013.
The board approved 14 holidays: Labor Day (Sept. 3); Commonwealth Cultural Day (Oct. 8); Citizenship Day (Nov. 5); Election Day (Nov. 6); Veterans Day (Nov. 11); Thanksgiving (Nov. 22); Constitution Day (Dec. 7); Christmas Day (Dec. 25); New Year’s Day (Jan. 1); Martin Luther King Jr. Day (Jan. 21); President’s Day (Feb. 18); Commonwealth Covenant Day (March 25); Good Friday (March 29); and Memorial Day (May 27).
Ten professional development days were also incorporated into the new calendar.
The board also approved a new school calendar for the Early Intervention Program, which has also 180 instructional days from Aug. 29 through June 11, 2013.
