A vehicle of the Department of Public Safety’s Boating Safety Section sank in the waters of Smiling Cove Marina when a rescue boat backed down and hit a trailer Saturday afternoon.
No injuries were reported in the accident that was reported to DPS Central Saturday at 4:10pm, according to Sgt. Thomas Blas Jr. yesterday.

Blas said preliminary investigation conducted by BSS investigator Norbert Pua showed that the pickup truck with license plate GOVT 41-73 backed down on the launch ramp with the trailer for the BSS Zodiac II vessel.

Zodiac II was to be loaded onto the trailer. Zodiac II maneuvered onto the trailer but was misaligned so it needed to back off the trailer to realign.

As Zodiac II reversed out of the trailer, it somehow got snarled in the line to the trailer. Zodiac II dragged the trailer along with the government vehicle into the water.

Blas said that Fire Division rescue personnel hooked up the truck and removed it from the lagoon at 5pm that same day.

Blas said no oil leak was reported.

Blas said this incident is still under investigation by BSS as well as the Traffic Section.
