Board opens up 12 new positions in wake of Soudelor
The Commonwealth Utilities Corp. board has opened up a total 12 positions within the utility, mostly for power distribution crew.
In three separate motions last week, board members voted for five new positions for Tinian, five new positions on Rota, and two new positions on Saipan.
Citing 70 unfilled positions at CUC, board members noted the positions would be within budget.
Albert Taitano, the board member from Rota, motioned to open five new positions on Rota, specifically a safety officer, a warehouse assistant, two line crew for power distribution, and one cashier.
Board member Joe Torres, from Saipan, motioned for two trade assistants for Saipan power position.
Tinian board member Eric San Nicolas motioned to open four positions for either their water or power crew, and one administrative assistant position.
For the need for a warehouse manager, Taitano said that after Typhoon Dolphin there was a warehouse that went unchecked.
“…We have a warehouse there that nobody takes care. After a typhoon, everyone just goes in and take anything without any kind of inventory. We need someone to be responsible for that,” he said.
San Nicolas said he has been communicating with the deputy director on Tinian who has been expressing the need for these positions.
CUC Power Manager Gary Camacho added that the reason why they need a couple more crew on Rota, and Tinian for that matter, is that when CUC get into situations like the destruction left behind by Typhoon Soudelor, CUC “will draw” from the other islands.
