CNMI Board of Parole chair Ramon “RB” Jose Blas Camacho filed yesterday his candidacy as independent to challenge the re-election bid of incumbent Saipan Mayor David M. Apatang at the Nov. 6 general election.

Camacho trooped to the Commonwealth Election Commission at 3pm to file his candidacy. He was accompanied by his family, supporters, and his committee-to-elect.

“My candidacy for mayor here on Saipan is about us—the community,” said Camacho in an interview.

He said he wants to create neighborhood watch programs in the villages especially since the issue that the island is facing is high crimes.

“I want to revive these programs here. Bring the community, empower the community, make the community involve,” said Camacho who is a retired police official.

He said the solution to the community problems is by making the community involved in the community issues.

“Those are the programs that I want to establish when I become a mayor,” he said.

On his chances of defeating Apatang, Camacho said he has been doing house visits and that he sees positive effects.

Camacho said if elected, his leadership team “will generate the necessary vitality, stewardship, and liveable and thriving communities for a healthy qualify of life.”

He said they will promote, among other things, self-sustaining and health-conscious practices through community gardening.
