Blue Eagle topples top seed A’s Car Aircon

Blue Eagle/Royal Pacific upset top seed A’s Car Aircon, 74-67, as the playoffs of the masters division of the 2nd Annual Saipan Centennial Lions Basketball League last Thursday at the Civic Center Basketball Court.
Blue Eagle jumped the gun on A’s Car Aircon from the get-go, as Andrew Ashburn and Melvin Villarin combined for 9 points to give them a 17-8 lead after the first quarter.
It was mammoth center De Shawn Reign and pint-sized point guard Mark Francisco’s turn to puncture the hoop come the second quarter, as the duo combined for 9 points to push Blue Eagle to a 35-26 spread at the half.
A’s Car Aircon rallied at the start of the third quarter and managed to outscore Blue Eagle, 17-14, thanks to the efforts of Cecilio Bisana and Jorge De Guzman to slice their deficit to just 49-43 heading into the fourth and final canto.
That’s when Jet Jandoc saved his best for last as the lanky forward unloaded all of his 8 points and got help from Ashburn’s 6 points to lead Blue Eagle to the 7-point win.
Ashburn and Reign led Blue Eagle with 16 points apiece, while A’s Car Aircon got a game-high 27 points from Bisana and 18 points from sharpshooter Bernard Montano. De Guzman wound up with 10 points also in a losing cause.
Blue Eagle now takes on Blue Haus tonight starting at 7:30pm. The winner advances to the finals. The loser, meanwhile, will take on the winner of the of Ol’Aces-A’s Car Aircon match set also for tonight at 6pm. Blue Haus won via forfeit against O’Aces last Saturday.
