Blocked sewer line causes wastewater service interruption
There is currently an emergency wastewater service interruption for Commonwealth Utilities Corp. customers in the areas of Gualo Rai and China Town.
This will affect the wastewater services for CUC customers who live in the areas of Gualo Rai and on Chalan Pale Arnold Road from Transamerica to the Sugar King Park in Garapan.
This emergency wastewater service interruption is due to a sewer line blockage near the Garapan Central Park intersection. Last Feb. 13, CUC received a trouble call reporting a wastewater overflow. The overflow was caused when the Department of Public Works’ contractor poured cement to address a cave-in nearby a storm drain located in front of the Garapan Central Park. In the process of filling in the cave-in, the cement entered a sewer manhole and collections system. The hardened cement caused a blockage in the collections system, thus affecting sewer service.
Over the past week, CUC wastewater operators have been working on removing the cement in the affected manhole and sewer main to prevent any sewer overflows. However, it was discovered on the evening of Friday, Feb. 21, that the upstream 10-inch sewer main was filled with approximately 30 feet of cement. As a result, CUC installed a temporary bypass system on the outer northbound lane on Chalan Pale Arnold from the Taro Sue Store to the front of the Garapan Central Park.
The running of the wastewater bypass line requires the northbound lane to be closed until the blocked section of sewer main and manhole is replaced. Updates will follow as soon as they are available. (PR)
