GUAM—Senator Frank Blas Jr. is calling on the Attorney General to assist with the Governor’s efforts to deport eligible felons who are here on Guam under the Compacts of Free Association.

In a letter sent yesterday to Attorney General Elizabeth Barrett-Anderson, Blas writes, “While I wholeheartedly support the concept of deporting eligible convicted criminals, I do want to ensure that everything is done to guarantee that these individuals are never allowed to return to our island.”

In recent news, Gov. Eddie Calvo has announced that he has commuted prison sentences of convicted criminals who are here on our island because of the Compacts. Compact citizens are treated as non-resident aliens under the law, and can be deported if found guilty of certain crimes.

“While I applaud Governor Calvo for his swift actions, I am concerned that there may not be enough follow up on these cases to guarantee that these specific individuals do not return to Guam,” Blas stated in his letter. “I turn to you as the Attorney General of Guam to review this matter and provide guidance on what we, as a local government, can do to ensure the convicted felons do not reappear in our community. As such, I am willing to introduce legislation you believe may be required in order to fully support and strengthen this process.”

The senator invited the Attorney General to meet with him to further discuss this matter “to ensure that all elements of this process are thorough and can withstand any legal challenge.”

A copy of the letter is attached. For more information, please contact the Office of Senator Frank F. Blas, Jr., at 475-2527 or via email at frank.blasjr@gmail.com.
