TINIAN—Due to COVID-19 and our current situation with the pandemic, it has caused a lot of setbacks and redirection in our everyday lives.

However, that did not stop Miss Earth NMI candidate Julia Biton from putting her advocacy into action and expressing her love toward our environment.

Her advocacy is to share the benefits of recycling, spread awareness of global warming, and lead the youth of the Mariana Islands to the importance of environmental awareness.

Last Aug. 16, Biton hosted her own Fit-Beach Coastal Cleanup, in partnership with the Anti-Tobacco Program. The cleanup started at Taga Beach and participants walked along the shoreline and sidewalks to collect trash and debris. Participants of the cleanup were given a free T-shirt, as well as reusable shopping bags provided by Karl Nabors.

“As a candidate for Miss Earth NMI, I want to start putting my advocacy into action and show the people that I am doing this not only for the title, but for the better of our environment and our community,” stated Biton.

During the cleanup, the participants were always reminded to wear face coverings and maintain social distancing, to make sure everyone stayed safe. While maintaining social distancing, everyone seemed to enjoy the activity and help the environment at the same time.

Despite the pandemic, Biton wants to continue leading her community and spreading awareness, positivity, and love toward the protection of our Earth, even if it has to be at home and through social media because of the new implemented restrictions and curfew.

Furthermore, Biton would like to thank everyone who participated in the event, the Tinian Mayor’s Office, the Anti-Tobacco Program, Mr. and Mrs. Allen Perez, Karl Nabors, Patrick San Nicolas, JC Café, and to others who donated and assisted with the preparation to make her coastal cleanup such a successful event.

“I want to remind everyone that even during the pandemic, there are many ways we can protect Mother Earth, even at our own homes. This pandemic should not stop you, because it will definitely not stop me from creating a beautiful place for us and our future generations to grow,” said Biton. (PR)
