The Japanese community in the Commonwealth is gearing up to celebrate the upcoming birthday of Japanese Emperor Akihito on Dec. 6 at the Grandvrio Resort Saipan.

The Consular Office of Japan will host a reception in honor of the birthday of his majesty at the Fiesta Hall of Grandvrio Resort, at 6pm on Tuesday.

Emperor Akihito, whose original name is Tsugu Akihito, will become 83 years old on Dec. 23, 2016. His birthday has been celebrated as a national holiday in Japan.

Emperor Akihito and Empress Michiko visited Saipan on June 27 and 28, 2005, to pay tribute to the dead of World War II.

James Sakamoto from the Consular Office of Japan said, “Japanese mythology says that the Japanese emperors, who are called tenno in Japanese, are the descendants of the sun goddess named Amaterasu Omikami, and that the first emperor, Jimmu, ascended the throne and began his reign in 660 B.C. Emperor Akihito is thought to be a direct descendant of Emperor Jimmu and is the 125th emperor to succeed to the throne.”
