Marianas Water survives 8 Division in overtime
Marianas Water needed extra five minutes to slip past 8 Division, 82-80, during the curtain raiser in the 2012 DLX/DL JOS Inter-Color Basketball League last Saturday night at the Gualo Rai Basketball Court.
Marianas Water outgunned 8 Division in the first 1:30 of the overtime, 7-2, and drew timely baskets from Amor Casabuena and Melvin Capalad in the closing seconds to improve to a 2-1 record.
The game went into extra five minutes after both teams muffed their chances of winning the match in regulation. Daniel Dela Cruz had a split for 8 Division, missing his first free throw before making the second for the equalizer. His charities came after 8 Division moved within one off Rafael River’s triple, 66-67, and Marianas Water missed on the other end.
Marianas Water then had another opportunity to win the game outright when they had the final possession in regulation, but Capalad faltered on his turnaround shot from the left baseline as time expired.
In overtime, 8 Division’s Jun Hernandez made the first basket, but Marianas Water answered with a 7-0 run off Casabuena’s triple and Dennis Pacheco and Joseph Galulu’s layups for their 74-69 lead, with still over three minutes left in the game.
8 Division refused to give up as it launched its own short 5-0 rally and had a chance to either tie the game or take the lead with a triple after Marianas Water had another botched play. However, Marianas Water made a defensive stop, stealing the ball from Tito Alano near midcourt and completing the big play with Casabuena pulling away for an uncontested layup.
Marianas Water extended the lead to five, 80-74, going into the final 30 seconds, but 8 Division was not ready to throw the towel yet as Hernandez scored three quick points in the ensuing plays. Ahead by only three, 80-77, Marianas Water rushed the inbound play and Capalad found himself alone at their frontcourt for the easy insurance basket. A buzzer-beating triple from Hernandez pegged the final score.
