About 40 IT&E employees along with family members took part in the company cleanup initiative along the Beach Road pathway last June 16.

The volunteers gathered at their meeting point by the Old Japanese Tank across from the Quartermaster Road, with some of them showing up as early as 5:30am on a weekend to pick up litter within the 2.5-mile stretch of the pathway.

The telecommunications company led Saturday’s activity which is one of their many ways to give back to the island community, according to IT&E human resources director Shirley Dotts.

“We have a lot of employees who walk or run the pathway and they noticed some trash and thought it would be a nice thing to do every quarter, coming out and just clean the pathway,” she told Saipan Tribune.

While the cleanup is voluntary, Dotts noted that they regularly get a fair number of people who participate in the quarterly activity, including those who have to work on the same day.

Dotts said that the several bags of trash they collected will be picked up by the Division of Environmental Quality which is in charge of the disposal.

Besides helping the community, the cleanup is also an opportunity to get together the IT&E employees outside work as they get to enjoy the company of one another over refreshments served following the activity. Last Saturday, the volunteers relished succulent grilled burgers and fresh local fruits.

“We want to thank them because it’s all voluntary,” said Dotts. “We like their spirit and being able to help the community. It’s just a good thing. I think a lot of them like to do it because it is helping the community and just getting together with friends. They’re enjoying themselves.”
