28 sports in 2015 Pacific Games
The PNG2015 Games Organizing Committee has released the list of events to be played in the 2015 Pacific games in Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea.
The sports program has 28 sports with 12 of them listed under compulsory sports, such as athletics, basketball, football, golf, rugby 7’s, table tennis, swimming, lawn tennis, va’a (canoe racing), indoor and beach volleyball, and weightlifting for both men and women’s divisions. Included in the optional sports are men’s and women’s bodybuilding, boxing, cricket, hockey, karate, lawn bowls, powerlifting, sailing, shooting, softball, squash, taekwondo, and triathlon, women’s netball, men’s Rugby League 7’s, and mixed touch rugby.
The 2015 Pacific Games will be held from July 4 to 18 with the host nation allotting $100 million for the hosting of the quadrennial event. Papua New Guinea won the hosting rights for the Games against American Samoa, Solomon Islands, Tonga, and Vanuatu, which will host the 2017 Mini Games.
Although the Pacific Games are still three years away, Northern Marianas Amateur Sports Association president Michael White in an email to NMASA members said “it’s never too early to start getting ready” for competition.
Meanwhile, White also reminded interested teams about the 2013 Mini Games in Wallis & Futuna.
The NMASA head during the group’s monthly meeting at the conference room of the Gilbert C. Ada Gymnasium last week said airfare for French territory island is around $2,400. The competition will run from Sept. 2 to 12 and is offering the following events: athletics, beach volleyball, weighlifting, Rugby 7’s, va’a, indoor volleyball, taekwondo, and sailing (hobbie cat and laser).
The CNMI and other member-nations of the Pacific Games Association have until December this year to confirm their participation (by events only) to next year’s event.
