Vacos Locos tops GCDC Coed Volleyball

Vacos Locos topped five other teams and was declared champion of the Garapan Community Development Center’s Co-Ed Volleyball Tournament held last Saturday on the Carolinian Affairs Office playground in Garapan.

The team is made up of A.J. and Willie Aguilar, Jason Limes, John Nekaifes, Ben Olopai, Daymart Teregeyo, and Toni Yamada. The team was awarded trophies after sweeping the field.

Vacos Locos downed Love Handles in the opening round, 25-17, and, 25-12, and then went through Fanians, 25-19, and 25-14, in the second round.

It then ousted the Rebels in the upper bracket semifinals in just two sets, 25-21, and, 25-10, to advance to the finals with a twice-to-beat advantage.

Vacos Locos’ A.J. Aguilar smashed four spikes in the opening set against Love Handles and the team collectively tallied 14 spikes against the Fanians. A.J. Aguilar then mustered two spikes in the second set against the Rebels.

Love Handles battled back through the lower bracket over Saipan International School’s Geckos, 25-18, and, 25-21, before being gifted a berth into the finals via forfeit by the Rebels.

Vacos Locos took the first finals set, 25-23, but fell in the second duel, 21-25, before recovering in the final set, 15-6.

They hammered four spikes, two of which from Limes, and two blocks in the opening set. A.J. Aguilar delivered two blocks in the second set, while Nekaifes powered home the group’s lone spike in the finale.

The tournament utilized a double-elimination format with matches being decided by a best-of-three set series. Game point for the first two sets was set at 25 with a 30 cap limit, while the final set, if needed, was played to 15 with no limit; teams had to win by two points.

“We want to thank all of the players who came out to play last weekend and hope everyone had fun. I also want to send a big special thanks to both vice speaker Felicidad Ogumoro and Rep. Edmund Villagomez for their continued support,” said GCDC’s Joe Diaz.

Diaz added that the GCDC hopes to hold another volleyball event next month after hearing all of the positive feedback.

The format of future events will be flexible to satisfy an expected larger and more diverse turnout next time around.

Notably, Ogumoro and Villagomez have been the primary supporters of the GCDC during all of their family oriented recreational activities since it opened back in May 2011.

In addition, Diaz is hoping to start up a village basketball tournament in China Town at the end of the month, but is still waiting approval.

GCDC also is currently accepting registration forms for its Summer Camp program, which is scheduled to run from June 25 to July 28.

Forms can be obtained during regular weekday hours from 8am to 5pm at the GCDC office behind Garapan court.

Due to the small venue, only the first 50 kids ages 6 to 12 years old will be accepted into the program. They will participate in arts and crafts, volleyball, basketball, and maybe even some canoeing.

Anyone who wants to volunteer to help teach the children arts and crafts are welcome to help out.
