Today marks the beginning of the Marianas History Conference, which will be held at the Fiesta Resort & Spa in Garapan until June 16.

The first of its kind in the CNMI, the Marianas History Conference is open to the public for free and is sponsored by the NMI Humanities Council, the Guam Preservation Trust, Guampedia.com, and the Tan Siu Lin Foundation.

The theme for the three-day conference is “One Archipelago, Many Stories” as the conference aims to reunify the history of the Marianas, which has become fragmented due to the islands’ political division.

Registration for the conference, including the welcoming of off-island delegates, will start at 8am, with a roundtable discussion on “Administration of Public History” from 1pm to 3pm.

The Marianas History Conference will kick off at 3:30pm with keynote speakers. Fr. Francis X. Hezel, SJ, will talk about “Setting the Agenda: Quilting the Patches and Stitching them Together” while Dr. Robert Underwood will discuss “Leapfrogging Through History: Hayi Mañaina-mu.”

Another featured presenter, Pale Eric Forbes, will lecture about “Migration of Chamorros from Guam to Saipan in the late 1800s.”

The conference lectures are broken down into six time periods and categories: Oral History/Genealogy, Ancient History, Early Colonial History, World War II, Late Colonial History, and Recent History.

The conference will also be highlighted by poster presentations, with the closing plenary session to be held on Saturday around 3:10pm to 4:15pm. Optional tours for conference participants will also be available.
