Derik Reyes, the suspect in the burglary at the U.S. Army Reserve Center’s troop store in Puerto Rico, Saipan, surrendered yesterday to the Department of Public Safety.

Reyes showed up at DPS accompanied by his mother at 12:21pm and was placed under arrest at 12:26pm, police spokesman Jason Tarkong told Saipan Tribune.

Tarkong said the mother contacted police detective Roque Camacho yesterday about Reyes’ intent to surrender.

At 12:14pm, police detective Jess Norita, who was with Camacho at the time, called DPS Central to inform them about this development.

Reyes is expected to be taken to the Superior Court today, Monday, for his initial appearance.

Superior Court associate judge Joseph N. Camacho signed the warrant for the arrest of the 31-year-old Reyes on June 4, for the charges of burglary, theft, and criminal mischief. He imposed an $11,250 cash bail.

Acting DPS commissioner Ambrosio Ogumoro earlier stated that police have made several attempts to locate Reyes at his house and have contacted family and friends, hoping he would surrender.

The U.S. Army Reserve Center’s troop store was burglarized on May 30 and the suspect was caught on surveillance camera committing the crime.

Reported stolen were a 32-inch Panasonic LCD flat screen TV, HP 201 monitors, and Bose portable music systems, all estimated to cost over $1,500.

Police investigation showed that the suspect used a bolt cutter to cut the padlock on a shipping container used as a storage room of the troop store.
