Fitial withdraws Guerrero’s nomination to MPLT board
Gov. Benigno R. Fitial withdrew yesterday from the Senate his appointment of Francisco Q. Guerrero to the Marianas Public Land Trust board, while at the same time re-appointing Jeremy J. Atalig of Rota to the CNMI State Rehabilitation Council.
Fitial withdrew Guerrero’s appointment in a one-page letter to Senate President Paul Manglona (Ind-Rota).
Fitial’s recall of Guerrero’s appointment comes days after Guerrero was arrested on charges of allegedly molesting a 16-year-old girl. He is free on bail after being allowed to post a property bond.
On May 14, the governor nominated Guerrero, also a former Commonwealth Utilities Corp. board chair, to serve on the MPLT board for a six-year term.
Sen. Frank Cruz (R-Tinian), chair of the Senate Committee on Executive Appointments and Government Investigations, reiterated that he looks forward to Fitial’s submission of another name for the MPLT board and for other boards and commissions.
Fitial also re-appointed yesterday Jeremy J. Atalig to the CNMI State Rehabilitation Council, representing the business, labor and industry on Rota. The Senate’s advice and consent is not required in this nomination.
Atalig’s term begins immediately and will expire on May 19, 2015.
