Routs were the theme at the resumption of the 2012 UFO Masters Budweiser Cup last Sunday at the Gilbert C. Ada Gymnasium.

In the first game, Bayani/LBT Appraisal whipped VisMinda/Hi-Five, 91-67, for its debut win.

Bayani scored 22 points each in the first and second quarters, while limiting VisMinda to 23 points in the opening half en route to the easy win.

Jack Palacios led Bayani’s lopsided victory with his 17 points, while Tony Diaz and Alex Ocampo added 16, and Felix Palacios chipped in 11. Diaz had 7 in the first period, lifting Bayani to a 21-11 advantage, while Jack Palacios also had 7 in the second canto for a comfortable 44-23 halftime lead. Bayani never looked back from thereon.

In the second game, Batangas/Fong’s Bakery recovered from its opening day loss to MDX/Armatech (63-72) with a big 29-point win over MAFEA/CMI.

A 30-14 scoring in the third period allowed Batangas to pull away after a close first half that ended with MAFEA behind by only four, 22-26.

Joel Buniag, Jun Abedes, and Romy Bernardo joined forces in the third-quarter juggernaut, combining for 19 points, while their three other teammates also made it to the scoreboard that showed Batangas already on top by 20, 56-36.

Abedes went on to top-score for Batangas with 22 points, while Buniag contributed 19.

MDX 95, Laguna 78

Defending champion MDX/Armatech closed out the night with a 17-point win over Laguna/Twinkle.

A 24-9 start was all MDX needed to get its second win in as many games and take the early lead in the six-team field.

Martin Moreno led MDX’s good start, scoring 11 straight points in the opening canto. He finished with 15, just one point short of the team’s leading scorer, Yosh Gabaldon. The 10 MDX players also scored, showing the defending champion’s much deeper bench against the depleted roster of Laguna.
