Champions crowned
Last week was coronation time for champion teams.
In the Micronesian Basketball Tournament, Guam swept the boys and girls crowns, demolishing Palau, 100-58 and beating CNMI 1, 70-56.
In the 2012 Saipan Little League Baseball, the Red Sox topped the Junior League, while the Ol’Aces and Hustlers, reigned supreme in the Senior and Big League divisions, respectively. The Red Sox took the title after pulling off an upset over pennant champion Hawaiya Technologies, Inc.-Ol’Aces in the finals 8-7; the Ol’Aces defeated the Falcons in the Senior League finale, 11-7; and the Hustlers shut out the Ol’Aces, 6-0, in the Big League title showdown.
In the 30th CNMI May Masters Tournament, veteran bowler Diana Camacho took the women’s tiara, while Percy Omechelang secured the men’s title. Camacho prevailed over Gloria Omechelang, Gina Sablan, Yho Villavicencio (2,024), Carol McKenzie, while Percy edged former May Masters winners Robert Talavera and Alex Castro.
In the NMIFA youth league, Shirley’s Coffee Shop and MP United Silver claimed the girls and boys U15 championships, while Matansa U12 ruled the FA Cup (for girls U15 and boys U12).
Sharing the limelight with the champion teams and individuals were CNMI swimmers who represented the Commonwealth well in the 2012 Guam Championships in Hagatna and winners in the 2012 Micronesian Junior Tennis Championships
Included on the list were Tsunami Saipan Swimming Center’s Miku Tammy and brothers Ryuto and Kaito Yanai and Saipan Swim Club’s Victoria Chentsova, Taiga Sato, and Kento Akimaru.
Tammy crushed four marks in the girls 9 to 10 age group, while Ryuto and Kaito reset records in the boys U8 and 11 to 12 divisions, respectively. All three Tsunami Saipan swimmers also took the championship in their respective age groups, while SSC’s Sato, Chentsova, and Akimaru finished third in their divisions.
In tennis, U18’s Christian Miller and Thea Minor, U15’s Chris Cajigan and Negahr Rastguiy, U12’s Clayton Izuka and Julia Ishikawa and U10’s Catherine Atalig and Kevin Kim made up the Micronesian tournament champions’ circle.
Meanwhile, other competitions on Saipan continued with the DLX/DL JOS and Blue Haus basketball leagues having its regular season games and the IT&E doubles and singles badminton tournament continuing with its preliminary matches.
