Fond memories of Saipan
In browsing the Internet, I came across the Saipan Tribune and the article about when tourism started on Saipan and I started thinking about the time I spent with my parents and brothers on Saipan (lived in San Antonio) during the early 1970s and remembered the great times my family had there.
We had a choice to live on Capital Hill but chose to live in San Antonio where we could be closer to the beach and the island life. I remember going almost daily to the Royal Taga Hotel (the only hotel on the island at the time) and swimming out to the two Sherman tanks in the lagoon and boonie-stomping in the woods for World War II relics.
We swam and climbed the walls at the Grotto and we would camp at Wing Beach (a name we gave it because there was nothing on the beach but an old fighter aircraft wing). I can remember the elevator at the Royal Taga Hotel, which was a tourist attraction. People would come from miles around just to get a chance to ride up and down on the elevator.
My time on Saipan gave me a special grasp on what the “rest of the world” was like and really cherished the people on the island who gave me memories I will never forget. I hope to get there again.
