Juan R. Babauta, a former candidate for a House of Representatives seat, was slapped with a 30-month prison term for sexually abusing a minor girl.

The 53-year-old Babauta pleaded guilty on Thursday to sexual abuse of a minor in the second degree.

Superior Court Associate Judge Perry B. Inos sentenced Babauta to five years in prison, all suspended except for 30 months, without the possibility of parole, with credit for the 138 days he has already served in jail.

Upon completing his sentence, Babauta will be placed on probation for three years. He was also required to pay a $500 fine, $100 in court assessment fee, and probation service fee.

Inos ordered the defendant to undergo assessment at the Community Guidance Center and complete any recommended course of counseling.

According to the plea agreement, Babauta had sexual contact with a 12-year-old girl on Jan. 26, 2012, on Saipan. Police arrested him in January at his residence in As Matuis.

Detective Rudolfo Hermosilla stated in his report that preliminary investigation showed that Babauta picked up the 12-year-old girl from a residence on Jan. 6, 2012, at 6pm, and brought her to a house in As Matuis, where he allegedly sexually assaulted her.

Saipan Tribune learned that Babauta was the CNMI Republican Party’s candidate for Precinct 4 in the 2009 election. He lost.
