Semis seats at stake in women’s league
The last two semis berths in the 2012 NMIFA Women’s Spring League will be contested today at the start of the playoff round of the 11 aside competition at the Hopwood Junior High School Field.
MP United FC and Tan Holdings collide in the first game at 8:30am, while Independents FC takes on Matansa in the second playoff match at 10:30am with the winners joining early semifinalists Shirley’s FC and Paire FC.
Shirley’s and Paire claimed the automatic semis tickets in the six-team field after finishing in the Top 2 in the double-round robin season. Shirley’s took the No. 1 spot with its 9-1-0 win-draw-loss card and 57 goals in 10 games, while Paire came in at second with its 8-1-1 record and 28 goals.
Shirley’s got its ninth win in the elimination last Saturday against Independents, 2-0. Jhaneeka Atalig and Jeraldine Castillo scored one goal each in Shirley’s shutout win of IFC with the former finding the back of the net in the 25th minute and the latter 30 minutes later.
Independents fell to a 3-1-5 slate and was held to 10 goals, completing the regular season at fourth place.
Paire sealed the No. 2 spot in the standings after a 5-0 victory over MP United last Sunday. Kelsey Mueller and Juliana Muna canned two goals apiece, while Patty Coleman chipped in one, bringing Paire’s total in 10 games to 28.
MP United was held to 16 goals after failing to score in its last game and landed in third place with its 5-1-4 record.
Matansa edged Tan Holdings in the rankings, with the former saving fifth place and the latter ending at sixth and last. Matansa clobbered Tan Holdings last Saturday, 10-1, to finish the regular season with a 1-1-8 record. Tan Holdings was winless, had only one draw, and recorded eight losses.
Manami Tadokoro scored seven goals in Matansa’s last regular season game to up the team’s total to 13. Asia Michaleun, Pinyarat Shankaweiler, and Melanie Santos added one goal apiece for Matansa, while Tan Holding’s lone goal came from Nelisa Brel.
Meanwhile, the winner of the MPU-Tan Holdings playoff tiff will challenge Shirley’s in the semifinals, while the victor of the IFC-Matansa duel will take on Paire in the other Final Four pairing, next Saturday.
