The Fastbreakers out-steadied Gualo Rai, 92-83, in overtime as the 2012 Domino Lux DL/JOS Intercolor Basketball League season continued over last Saturday at the Gualo Rai Basketball Court.

In other results, D-31 barely made it past Marianas Water, 73-72, in Saturday’s late game, while on Friday Pacific Grocers held on to defeat Sinigang, 70-63, after which Pogi fought off LO Prime-Blue Ice, 71-59.

Gualo Rai postured an early 19-18 edge in the first quarter on Saturday’s late pairing from 9 points by Nelson Samson, but the Fastbreakers answered back in the second quarter and moved in front, 32-28, at halftime. Five different players put a hand in during the surge.

Gualo Rai made some adjustments at intermission and reclaimed the lead, 53-50, heading in the final period thanks to nine free throws by Danny Dayrit and 10 other markers from Victor Mallari.

Luther Taylor managed 8 points in the third quarter to keep the Fastbreakers in range and teammates Nevin Salem and Melvin Cadiang each tallied nine in the fourth quarter to help knot the match at 79-all at the end of regulation.

J.P. Jose strung together 16 points for Gualo Rai in the fourth, but his team could not shut the door on Fastbreakers in the bonus period.

It also helped that Fastbreakers limited Jose to just two buckets in overtime, while Salem dropped seven to secure the win.

Salem led the victors with 24 points in the game, while Jose led all scorers with 27, while Dayrit finished with 12, all from the free throw line.

Marianas Water’s Melvin Caplad connected on a couple of early 3-pointers in Saturday’s opener to push his team in front, 23-16, in the first quarter, but D-31’s Rodney Sacramento delivered 10 points in the second period to pull his team within a point, 37-38, at the half.

Both teams battled back and forth as it became a 52-all deadlock heading into the final period.

D-31’s Jimmy Florendo provided 8 points in the third quarter, while Marianas Water received markers from a mixed bag of players.

This match went all the way down to the wire and despite six free throws made by Marianas Water in the late minutes, 7 big points from D-31’s Dexter Tenorio played a larger role in the outcome.

He scored only four points in the previous three quarters before playing the late hero.

Teammate Sacramento carried the torch with 21 points overall, while Marianas Water’s Capalad topped the field with 25.

Pac-Groicers’ Joel Saplan carried his team with 9 points at the start of Friday’s opening tiff, but it remained knotted at 15-all after the first quarter of play.

He added eight in the second period and received some needed support from his team to nab a 33-30 edge at the half, but Sinigang regrouped after the break and turned the tables, 54-51, in the third period.

Sinigang’s Gary Macahinto and Jerald Hobijan combined for 16 in the rally, but its offense disappeared at crunch time.

Pac-Grocers’ Saplan led the field with 23 points, while Macahinto paced Sinigang with 18. The latter was held scoreless in the payoff period.

Pogi got an early, 12-7, margin in the opening 10 minutes of Friday’s late pairing and stretched it to a 30-19 advantage at midpoint for a strong defensive showing in the first half.

Pogi’s Jerwin Maguero then led his team’s third quarter push with 8 points that constructed a daunting, 52-34, lead heading into the last quarter as they cruised to an easy win.

Pogi’s Jason Bahillio and Harold Aranda led a well-balanced attack with a dozen apiece, while Blue Ice’s Ronald Araygar finished with a game-high 18 on the short end.
