GCA’s Aldan, Francisco top CCAC’s poster contest

Tommy Aldan and Joyce Liv Francisco from Grace Christian Academy’s second grade class under Rachel Epperson captured top awards in this year’s Commonwealth Council for Arts and Culture’s poster contest.
CCAC invited grades 1 to 3 students from public and private schools to make a poster about the coconut in celebration of the 31st Annual Flame Tree Arts Festival last April.
Aldan will receive $100 cash prize for winning first place and second placer Francisco will receive $75 cash prize from the council. Both of them made a poster of coconut with an island scene during their art class.
“All GCA students from grades 1 to 3 made their posters during their art classes in school and I helped them in mounting and framing them,” said art teacher Esther Manzano.
This is Aldan’s first year at GCA and his first time to win first place in an islandwide contest. “I was really happy to win,” he said.
GCA kindergarten teacher Marilyn Aldan, the mother of Aldan, said, “I was really surprised! I even asked Mrs. Manzano, ‘What did he do?’”
Francisco, who just enrolled at GCA this school year, was born and went to school in California. This was also Francisco’s first time to win an award as a GCA student.
Francisco’s parents, Jeffrey and Crizelda Francisco, were both happy and proud of their daughter’s award. “She was really surprised and never thought that she will win. She never told us about the contest,” said Crizelda Francisco.
Even though this is their first year at Grace Christian Academy, Manzano has already seen their artistic talents. Both students’ artwork have been displayed a lot of times in the weekly “Best Art Works” for grades 1 to 6 students.
Manzano said, “We are thankful for all the talents that God gave to our students especially in art. We have eight art winners in different art contests this school year.” [B][I](GCA)[/I][/B]
