1st Saipan Youth Music Concert raises $1.4K for PSS
Young award-winning musical talents got together Friday at the Pacific Islands Club Charley’s Cabaret for the 1st Saipan Youth Music Concert.
Organized by the Yonsei Academy, the event featured outstanding performances by local talents that won in the Tumon Bay Music Festival 2012 in Guam on March 2 to 10.
The performers were of diverse ethnic backgrounds from Yonsei Academy and Do Re Mi Music School, the Saipan Southern High School Manta Ray Band, and the Marianas High School Glee Club.
MHS Glee Club’s Harold Easton described the concert as a “very, very fine activity” as it provided an opportunity to gather “very interesting” talents on island, with the assistance of the students’ families.
“Without the support of these parents and families, none of these would be taking place,” added Easton.
Manta Ray Band conductor Will DeWitt said more people will look forward to succeeding concerts.
Friday’s two-hour fundraiser also collected $1,454, which was earmarked for the CNMI Public School System. DeWitt and Easton accepted the donation on behalf of PSS.
Youngmi Han, Yonsei Academy owner and teacher, said in an interview that organizing the event and getting sponsors and donors were challenges that they overcame by having the schools, teachers, and parents work together.
While the donation made to PSS was small, Han noted that it came from the heart “which is so important.”
Han said she wanted to have “a good purpose and influence” in the community and she thought of bringing together the musicians and singers that brought honor to the CNMI by winning awards and trophies in the Tumon Bay Music Festival.
According to Han, one’s musical talents are a gift from God and should be shared with others. She emphasized that music heals and relaxes people, uplifting spirits and making people around them happy.
Han said that they plan to hold the Saipan Youth Music Concert annually.
