Comets, junior netters rise
It was a very eventful week for the Rep. Joseph P. Guerrero Dandan Comets and top junior netters Thea Minor and Christian Miller after they won the championships in the Major League and CNMI Junior Tennis Championships, respectively.
The Comets won the 2012 Saipan Little League’s youngest division after defeating the Natibu Sports Association Talaabwogh Falcons, 3-1, last May 6.
The Comets, which went undefeated in the regular season and playoffs, was made up of Christopher Achas, Ethan Babauta, Edmund Cruz, Erik Cruz, Austin Hocog, Austin Indalecio, Rejay Iskawa, Aurel Mendiola, Kody Rabauliman, Lorenzo Sebaklim, Tryique Wally, Vincent Taman, and Norman Villagomez.
Minor, meanwhile, matched Kana Aikawa’s four straight CNMI Junior Tennis Championships girls 18-and-under singles championships also last May 6 after defeating older sister Thecel in the finals, 6-0, 6-0.
Miller, for his part, won his very first 18-and-under title later that day after outlasting defending champion Rafael Jones in a three-set, 6-7, 6-2, 6-4.
In the 9th Annual Escape from Managaha last May 5, Victoria Chentsova beat fellow Saipan Swim Club senior swimmer Kento Akimaru as 40 other intrepid swimmers completed the 2.4-kilometer channel between Managaha Island and American Memorial Park’s Micro Beach.
The week also saw Barracuda/Mantas defeat the Sharks/Dolphins, 28-16, to win the Garapan Community Development Center’s 2012 U17 Girls Basketball League.
Fabi Muna and Norbert Pangelinan also took home the top prize in Tinian’s 13th Cliff Fishing Derby after catching a 48-lb Trevali.
Matches in the Northern Mariana Islands Football Association’s men’s, women’s, and youth league, the Saipan Major League, older divisions of the Saipan Little League, the Chamolinian Softball League, as well as the Marianas Interscholastic Sports Organization girls fast-pitch softball league also continued this past week.
