The United Filipino Organization has scrapped its 21-39 age group and moved the opening of the 2012 UFO Inter-Organization Basketball Friendship League from May 12 to May 20.

Organizers have also changed the location of the opening ceremony as one of the fiberglass basketball backstops at the Gilbert C. Ada Gymnasium was broken earlier in the week.

UFO president Bong Malasarte said instead of the Oleai Sports Complex venue, the UFO caging will now stage its opening ceremonies and mostly likely its games at the Civic Center Basketball Court in Susupe.

He added that organizers were forced to shelve the 21-39 division because of the low number of teams that showed interest in joining the competition.

Malasarte said only four teams originally enlisted in the age group— MDX/Civic Boys, Bayani/Mobil, MIFICPA/Proa, and defending champion MAFEA/Konflikt.

Despite the postponement of the league and scrapping of the 21-39 age group, the UFO president said the show must go on and will when the Docomo Pacific Cup 15-20 division kicks off beginning 8:30am on May 20.

Two games will be on tap and like previous UFO basketball league openings, a Best Muse and Best Uniform Competition will be held.

Masters players will see action starting 2:30pm with a doubleheader for the Budweiser Cup 40-and-over division.

The 15-20 age group will have MDX/Mariana Resort & Spa, SIP/Flor Miranda, Bayani/DYS Jr. National A, Visminda/AON Jr. National B, MIFICPA/Gene’s Barber, and Power/Hi Five.

Expected to see action in the 40-and-over age group, meanwhile, are MDX/Armatech, Bayani/Triple J, Samahang Laguna, UPAA, Boholano, Batangas Blades/Fong’s Bakery, and Visminda/Island Rent A Car.

There will also be a 14-and-under division were players from MDX/Armatech, SMF, Boholano/Wings, and San Vicente will battle for basketball supremacy.

Malasarte said this year’s UFO games will be played every Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday. For more information, contact Bong Malasarte at 287-5525, Ed Manalili at 483-4337, Boy Ching at 287-6046, or Abner Venus at 888-7764.
