Dizon wins 2012 Tinian Fiesta Bike Race
Nep Dizon won the open division of the 2012 Tinian Fiesta Bike Race last Saturday after completing the 65-kilometer course that started and ended at Suicide Cliff in 2:38:33.
Dizon’s course time marked the fastest out of the 43 total competitors. Division runner-up Lewie Tenorio (2:42:48) finished just under five minutes later in front of eight other open division riders.
Less than a minute and a half in front of Tenorio came 36-44 age division’s Bob Ferrer (2:41:28) with the second fastest time of the day, while 45 and-over’s Rolando Campas crossed the line fourth overall in 2:45:28.
Meanwhile, women’s open winner Joann Salazar finished 21st overall, but her mark of 4:09:42 easily eclipsed runner-up Rosalina Lazaro (5:50:44) and third placer Marjorie Cabay (5:51:13) by almost two hours.
Salazar also still got to show a foursome of younger classmen what was up as 16-24 division winner Gerald Rangamar finished 29th in 4:35:47 ahead of Jerome Diyao (4:49:25), Zackariah Hofschneider (5:25:10), and James Manglona (5:37:13).
Remarkably, the 45-and-over class turned in a number of strong performances as nine of the 14 riders that made up the field finished in the Top 15 overall and 42 of the 43 total participants made it to the finish line.
The course was basically set up as a lap around the island that started and ended at Suicide Cliff. The riders started out at 5:36am that morning and traveled north from the landmark and continued along coastline. The course then went eastward and south until it worked its way around. As it entered the final leg of the circle, the path eventually ran northwest through the San Jose Fiesta grounds as it went back toward the cliff.
The open division first place winners each received a $200 cash prize provided by the Tinian Mayor’s Office and all other division winners were awarded $100 cash prizes. All second placers were presented with new cell phones compliments of Docomo Pacific, except for the 16-25 division runner-up who received a new phone from IT&E.
Other sponsors included Mobil, Budweiser, and the Biker’s Association of Tinian.
