CNMI Commerce Secretary Sixto K. Igisomar and fellow members of the National Association of Insurance Commissionersmet in the nation’s capital last week to confer with members of Congress about ongoing insurance-related efforts.

More than 36 state insurance regulators gathered for the NAIC Washington Forum where they were briefed by Department of Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius, Deputy Treasury Secretary Neal S. Wolin, Deputy Director for Oversight and Senior Research Fellow for Health Policy Studies for the Heritage Foundation Edmund Haislmaier. Rep. Judy Biggert (R-IL), chairperson of the House Financial Services Subcommittee on Insurance, Housing and Community Opportunity, also addressed regulators.

NAIC members also met with their congressional representatives to discuss:

– Dodd-Frank reform provisions such as the Federal Insurance Office and the Financial Services Oversight Council.

– State implementation efforts for health care reform.

– Proposed changes to the National Association of Registered Agents and Brokers (H.R. 1112) legislation.

In addition, regulators urged congressional delegates to consider long-term reauthorization of the National Flood Insurance Program.

“Meeting members of Congress in Washington, D.C. helps to reinforce the connection between actions at the federal level and the impact it has back home,” said Igisomar. “State regulators are the best resource to help D.C. policymakers understand how we can work together to protect consumers and promote competitive insurance markets in the CNMI.” (Office of the Governor)
