Sonics, Chow It enter semis in NMC caging
The Sonics and Mixed Skills notched separate wins at the start of the playoff round in the 2012 NMC Spring Intramurals’ Basketball Tournament last Friday at the Northern Marianas College Gymnasium to advance to the semifinals.
Chow It saw action in the second playoff game and slipped past Mixed Skills, 41-33, while the Sonics pounded 670 in the third match, 61-26. Pecking Ducks and Bubble Yum also made it to the Final Four after winning by forfeit against DNWUURRBIT and Teletubbies, respectitvely.
In the semis games that will be played today, Pecking Ducks take on Bubble Yum and 10am, while the Sonics and Chow It collide at 11am. Winners of the semis matches will duel for the championship at 1pm.
Four of the five Sonics players who suited up against 670 finished in double figures with Adrian Palacios leading the way with his 16 points. Jason Bahillo and Brian Ajoste added 15 and 14, respectively, while Mel Cadiang chipped in 12. Jose Tudela contributed four.
In the other quarterfinal match played last Friday, Chow It drew double figures from two players and four others also made it to the scoreboard. Mixed Skills had only four players scoring with one breaking into double digits.
The eight teams that joined this season’s basketball tournament played in a round-robin preliminary with Pecking Duck going undefeated in seven games to take the No. 1 ranking in the playoffs. Chow It finished second with its 5-2 card, beating the Sonics in the tiebreak, while Teletubbies came in at fourth (4-3), followed by Bubble Yum (3-4), 670 (2-5), Mixed Skills (1-6), and DNWUURRBIT (0-7).
Bubble Yum’s Joe Villacrusis emerged as the top scorer in the preliminary round with his total of 116 points, while Teletubbies’ Trevor Ogumoro was second with his 79. Just a point behind Ogumoro was third placer Palacios, while the Sonics’ James Kintz (74 points) and Pecking Duck’s Juan Iguel (63 points) rounded out the Top 5.
