Fitial names Fund, CDA appointees
Gov. Benigno R. Fitial re-nominated Edward C. Sablan to the Commonwealth Development Authority board and nominated Juan S. Torres to serve on the NMI Retirement Fund board. This comes in the wake of a Senate committee’s contentious recommendation to reject the re-appointment of former Fund board chair Sixto K. Igisomar.
Sablan and Torres’ re-appointment and appointment require the advice and consent of the Senate.
The Senate has a session scheduled for today, and one of the items on the agenda includes the Senate Committee on Executive Appointments and Governmental Investigation’s report on Igisomar’s re-appointment to the Fund board.
If confirmed, Torres will serve the unexpired term of Francisco P. Rosario, which will expire on May 7, 2015.
The panel withdrew the report last week after a lengthy and heated debate on its recommendation to reject Igisomar on the eve of a surprising filing of Chapter 11 bankruptcy by the Fund.
Sablan, if confirmed, will serve another four-year term on the CDA board. That term will expire on April 26, 2016.
Fitial said he and the lieutenant governor are confident that Torres and Sablan are qualified and will continue to devote their time to the boards in which they are appointed or reappointed.
The two are asked to provide copies of their resume, statement of financial interest, police records, drug test receipt and drug test result as soon as they become available.
