Presentations on new invasive species in Guam
Western Pacific Tropical Research Center entomologists Aubrey Moore and Ross Miller will offer updates on two of the most recent insect invasives to enter Guam: coconut rhinoceros beetles and little fire ants.
Moore’s presentation: “CRB is the BTS of the 21st Century” will give a history of the arrival of the beetles on Guam in 2007 and the tactics used to control the population with a discussion on the success and failures for each tactic.
Miller’s presentation: “Little Fire Ants vs. BTS, CRB, and Everything Else” will address the devastating effects of the little fire ant on biodiversity of Guam. “Any invasive species we find on Guam poses a threat to our neighboring islands due to our frequent air and sea connection,” said Miller.
Hosted by the Brown Tree Snake Technical Working Group, the spring 2012 Brown Tree Snake Scientific Presentations are open to the public and will cover BTS research, control and interdiction efforts as well as newly emerging invasive species issues in the Marianas. Speakers from the Guam Department of Agriculture, Department of Defense, U.S. Department of Agriculture, and U.S. Geological Survey will also be presenting.
The proceedings will take place on Wednesday, April 25, 2012, from 8am to 5pm, at the Navy MWR’s Top O’ the Mar on Nimitz Hill.
