GOP asks school principal to run for delegate
Gov. Benigno R. Fitial’s Republican Party has asked long-time educator Dr. Ignacia Tudela Demapan, the current principal of Kagman Elementary School, to become the party’s delegate candidate in the Nov. 6 elections.
The party asked Demapan on Sunday, a few days after Joeten-Kiyu Public Library executive director John Oliver “Bolis” Gonzales declined the Republican nomination “for personal reasons.”
GOP treasurer Ray Salas and other party members said yesterday that Demapan asked for more time to decide whether to accept the nomination.
The party held another meeting at the governor’s private residence in Gualo Rai last night.
Demapan has been an educator for more than 20 years. She was a teacher at San Antonio Elementary School and Marianas High School before becoming a vice principal at Gregorio T. Camacho Elementary School. She also served as vice principal and acting principal at Tanapag Elementary School. In 2000, she became principal at Kagman Elementary School. She earned her doctorate in psychology last year.
Republicans interviewed yesterday said that Demapan can beat Delegate Gregorio Kilili Sablan (Ind-MP), who is seeking a third term. Sablan, who is aligned with the Democratic Party in Congress, has been endorsed by the CNMI Covenant Party and the so-called Independent Republicans.
Fitial, now chairman of the Republican Party in the CNMI, wants Sablan to be replaced with a Republican.
