Dolphins sweep outrigger canoe opener
Marianas High School’s Dolphins ran the table in Marianas Interscholastic Sports Organization’s 2012 outrigger season opener held last Saturday morning at Kilili Beach.
The Dolphins dusted defending champion Saipan Southern High School in the 1,000m curtain raiser, finishing over 30 seconds ahead of their rival after timing in at 6:30.94. Southern submitted 7:07.69 for second place.
In the finals, MHS slowed down with its 6:40.21, but it was still good enough for a win in the photo finish against Southern, which clocked in at 6:41.66.
In the 500m warm-up, MHS secure a sound victory, completing the race under the three-minute (2:58:81) mark, while the Manta Rays trailed by just over 20 seconds (3:18:59). Then in the finals, the Dolphins had a quick sigh of relief after the Rays’ valiant effort as the former topped the sprint finale with a solid 3:03. 31, over 10 seconds faster than the latter (3:14. 97).
[B]Lady Rays triumph[/B]Meanwhile, the Lady Manta Rays swept the preliminaries and won the 1,000m finals, before running out of gas in the end during the 500m sprint final.
The Lady Rays logged 7:43.32 in the 1,000m preliminary, 20 seconds faster than the Lady Dolphins (8:03:66). In the 500m, Southern girls marked a 3:36.88 to lead MHS’ 3:43.82.
Then the Lady Rays paddled a bit slower in the finals, but still got the job done in the 1,000m event. The Lady Dolphins did a good job closing the gap the second time around and managed an overall time of 8:10.57, but SSHS clocked an 8:02.23 to still rule the 1,000m finals.
After fighting hard in the previous three races, the Lady Dolphins dug even deeper to steal the 500m sprint with a time of 3:33.83. Southern posted 3:44.75.
Only MHS and Southern participated in the season-opening races. The competition will continue this Saturday with the 500m and 1,500m races and junior high school exhibition heats.
