Southern beats NMA/MBA in MISO boys soccer
The defending champions Saipan Southern High School Manta Rays (2-0) bested Marianas Baptist Academy and Northern Marianas Academy (MBA-NMA/0-1), 3-1, in last Friday’s Marianas Interscholastic Sports Organization boys soccer match held at the Oleai Sports Complex Field.
The combined players of MBA-NMA took an early 1-0 lead thanks to a goal by Everest Van Der Maas II 20-minutes into the first half. However, the Rays’ Jake Lee knotted it back up just five minutes after Van Der Maas scored.
Then Southern’s Hae Sung Lee netted a go-ahead goal in the 29th minute, while teammate Scott King tacked on an insurance goal in the 38th minute of the second half.
Meanwhile, Saipan International School was scheduled to play Marianas High School’s Junior Dolphins (MHS2) in the second match, however for the second time in a row MHS2 could not suit up enough players and it looks they will pull out of the competition so organizers will adjust the game schedule accordingly.
Games will now be played at 4pm on Mondays and Tuesdays at the Hopwood Junior High School Field, while the two games every Friday at the Oleai pitch are scheduled for 3:45pm and 5:10pm.
Despite the lack of MHS players, the SIS Geckos still participated in a friendly exhibition match against a make-shift crew made up of some Dolphins and Rays players. The combined team won, 4-1, but scoring details were not recorded.
The season continues today at 4pm with SIS officially debuting against the MHS varsity Dolphins (0-1).
