2012 Mahi Fishing Derby set for tomorrow
The Saipan Fishermen’s Association is hosting the 8th Annual 2012 Mahi Fishing Derby tomorrow at the Smiling Cove Marina.
Pre-registration is scheduled for today, April 13, at Smiling Cove until 6pm.
Prizes are still being determined as organizers are hoping for over 30 participants.
The Top 5 finishers will all be awarded trophies and prizes. Only mahi fish will be counted toward the competition, regardless of the weight qualification and a boat can only win one prize per category.
Registration on the day of the derby starts at 5:30am at Smiling Cove Marina. At the start of the derby, all boats must check in between 6am and 8am before heading out to sea, however late entrants will be accepted. All competitors must enter their catches to derby officials by the 6pm deadline at the Smiling Cove weigh-in station in order to qualify.
The SFA would also like to remind all participants to make sure they sign the mandatory release waiver form, no exceptions.
Last year, the Carmelita, under captain and former Justice Alex Castro and crewmates Alex Castro Jr., Jerry Babauta and Rufino S. Inos, pulled in a record 30.35-lb mahi for top prize over a field of 31 boats.
This year’s derby is also made possible by longtime supporter the Marianas Visitor Authority and new sponsor Mar-Pac Budweiser.
