Fielders bury D-9ers, 17-6
IT&E Fielders bounced back from its debut loss with a swift 17-6 victory over D-9ers in seven innings as the Saipan Major League’s 2012 season continued Monday night at the Francisco “Tan Ko” Palacios Ballfield.
Fielders’ Ton Tenorio drove in Jimmy Brel to break the ice for the home team in the opening frame and they added two more runs in the second off an RBI single by designated hitter Wenser Namelo, who later scored off an error.
D-9ers mustered a run to start the third inning, but the Fielders trotted ahead, 6-1, in the bottom half off three hits. Justin Reyes bashed a two-RBI single and scored on an error.
D-9ers stranded just its third base runner in the top of the fourth, and had a little trouble trying to close the third out of the bottom frame.
In an effort to regroup, they battled back to grab a brief 4-7 count with three runs in the fifth inning off a wild pitch and some errors, but were struck down again by the Fielders who brought around four runs in the bottom frame. Brel bagged an RBI single and Tenorio an RBI double.
D-9ers blipped a run in the sixth and the Fielders delivered another knockout blow this time in the form of six runs to runaway, 17-4, in the bottom frame.
Winning pitcher Elton Santos gave up one earned run off two hits, three walks, and a hit batsman with 10 strikeouts through five innings.
Santos was solid on the mound, but with a promising lead already in hand, was tapped by Brel at the start of the sixth inning. Brel did a good job securing the early decision and held the D-9ers to just one run in the final stand..
Fielders’ Tenorio batted 2-for-2 with two RBIs, three runs, a pair of stolen bases, and three base on balls. Brel went 3-for-5 with two RBIs, three runs, and four steals. D-9ers leadoff man Esiah Lizama swung 3-for-4 with a run.
