A man who was charged with beating up his wife, trying to stab her with a kitchen knife, and slapping her daughter pleaded guilty and was given a six-month prison term.

Murphy Martin, 33, pleaded guilty last Thursday to attempted aggravated assault and battery as part of a plea agreement. The remaining charges were dropped.

Superior Court Associate Judge Perry B. Inos sentenced Martin to four years in prison, all suspended except for six months, with credit for the 19 days he has already spent in jail. He will start serving his sentence on May 3, 2012.

Once he gets out, Martin will be placed on probation for five years. He was also required to perform 100 hours of community service, and pay a $250 fine, $100 court assessment fee, plus probation fee.

Martin was also ordered to complete anger management counseling, a parenting class, and any other counseling recommended by the Office of Adult Probation or treatment provider.

The Office of the Attorney General had charged Martin with assault with a dangerous weapon, attempted aggravated assault and battery, three counts of assault and battery, and two counts of disturbing the peace.

Martin repeatedly hit his wife in the presence of a child on Sept. 11, 2011 on Saipan.

The police said that Martin slapped his wife, punched her on the head, and tried to stab her with two kitchen knives but was only prevented from doing so by a neighbor who witnessed him beating his wife. The neighbor managed to wrestle the knives away. Martin also allegedly slapped the victim’s daughter, a minor.
