Thursday Street Market relocates to Fishing Base
The Garapan Street Market on Thursdays will be temporarily moving to the Garapan Fishing Base starting this week until further notice, according to Melvin Faisao, secretary of the Department of Community and Cultural Affairs.
The relocation was due to the ongoing construction at the event’s main site at Paseo de Marianas after the Commonwealth Utilities Corp. uncovered that the area’s sewer line collapsed last week. Necessary work is expected to last from three to four weeks.
Faisao said that DCCA immediately notified its 43 Thursday Market vendors as soon as he received the information from CUC.
According to Faisao, the local government generates approximately $1,500 per week from the Street Market. He hopes that the public and tourists will continue to patronize the event as it temporarily relocates to new place.
As soon as the CUC construction is completed, Faisao said that vendors will be immediately notified of their return to the main site.
CUC deputy executive director Alan Fletcher said Sunday that the collapsed pipe is located between two manholes on Coral Tree Avenue fronting the Fiesta Resort & Spa Saipan and Hyatt Regency Saipan—the same location as the Thursday Street Market.
Saipan Tribune learned that CUC is currently operating a portable trash pump to divert wastewater from the blocked line. However, this is not a sustainable or desirable solution, especially located in Saipan’s busy tourist areas.
To repair this collapse, Fletcher said that CUC has engaged the services of GPPC, Inc. to install new pipes. The project is expected to cost $118,500.
