Local author Joseph “Joe Mango” Race offers yet another engaging novel titled The Mystery Hotel.

Race’s latest 184-page novel tells the story of Johnny Ornelas, a computer mogul who escapes the corporate life to settle down on the beautiful island of Saipan where he buys a luxury hotel and embarks on a new life.

But Ornelas’ newly acquired dream hotel is haunted by ghosts that make noise and bother customers. To make matters worse, Ornelas discovers reports of people who have gone missing from the hotel.

With all the mystery shrouding the hotel, Ornelas falls for a pretty and ambitious Chinese lawyer, Jan Nan, who is more focused on her job than on a relationship.

The Mystery Hotel also features Race’s famous characters, retired Los Angeles Sheriff Tom Parker and his Chamorro warrior best friend Carlos Montana, along with Doberman Zeus, a new and fearless character, taotaomonas, Yakuza, the Chinese Tong, and local bad guys.

Race described The Mystery Hotel as having “a little adventure and travel and plenty of romance fiction based on real live events.”

Race, who was a policeman for 45 years and served as chief investigator for the CNMI Attorney General’s Office, told Saipan Tribune via email that his inspiration for his stories “come from everyday life, especially my law enforcement interactions with people, and of course, a strong love and devotion of island life.”

Race has already written 11 novels, including a Christmas book, a shrimp cookbook with businessman Anthony Pellegrino, and a children’s book.

Race, who is currently working on a story of a young Marine in Vietnam, teaches English at the Northern Marianas College. He lives on Saipan with his wife and three children.

The Mystery Hotel is published by Trafford and costs $14 for paperback copies which can be purchased on Race’s website, www.josephrace.com. Both paperbacks and e-copies are also available on Amazon (www.amazon.com) and Barnes & Noble (www.barnesandnoble.com).
